How to Get a Job as a Nurse

You’ve just graduated nursing school, and now it is time to find a job. Many colleges have Nurse Career Days where you can learn about the different healthcare facilities in your area that are hiring. You could get career advice from alumni in the area. You can join nursing associations and take workshops to meet other caregivers who can share their experiences with you.

Or you can look at online sites with job listings for nurses, such as Indeed and Simplyhired. There are also targeted job sites that have listings for nurses, such as ShiftMed.com. These sites present the workforce with tailored work opportunities and a better way to find the work they need for their lifestyle.

Many nurses and caregivers want to find a career that fits the way they want to work, such as no weekend shifts, or locations within 10 miles of their home, or higher pay.

Is There a Nursing Shortage?

A dynamic nursing shortage is already underway for registered nurses. It’s happening locally, nationally, and globally. Unfortunately, it’s already starting to impact medical and care facilities—a problem that will continue to grow without a recruitment and retention plan.

As a counterpoint, the demand for skilled nurses is growing. An American Association of Colleges and Nursing (AACN) fact sheet notes that “according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Projections 2019-2029, registered nursing (RN) is listed among the top occupations in terms of job growth through 2029. The RN workforce is expected to grow from 3 million in 2019 to 3.3 million in 2029, an increase of 221,900 or 7%.”

ShiftMed Survey Shows 65.5% of Nursing Staff Want the Vaccine

Healthcare Workers Receptive As Other Americans; Want More Information

McLean, VA—March 2, 2021 — ShiftMed, LLC, an industry leader in on-demand health care staffing platforms, surveyed over 150 employees to determine their receptiveness to the COVID-19 vaccine. A downloadable summary report on the ShiftMed website reveals how nursing staff, mostly RN, LPN, or CNAs, feel about the vaccine and why some are reluctant to get vaccinated. The insights gleaned from the survey may give health care professionals enough knowledge to make the right decision about getting vaccinated.

“Frontline healthcare workers face a dilemma if they choose to get the vaccine and protect themselves from the virus, or not get it and potentially get COVID-19,” said Todd Walrath, CEO of ShiftMed. “To save lives, protect themselves and their families, health care workers should get the vaccine. Remember that patients and patient families need to know they are safe at the facility. Worker vaccination is one comfort for these families.”

Interesting statistics from the survey include:

How to Prevent Nurse Burnout

Nurse burnout is mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion caused by sustained work-related stressors.

Today’s nurses don’t just pass out medications. They multi-task. The long hours, pressure to make life-impacting decisions quickly, and strain of caring for patients who may have poor outcomes are just a few sources of nurse burnout.

Add in the stress of COVID-related protocols and illnesses, and nurses are multi-tasking under duress—from managing central lines to administered breathing treatments—and they may be at risk.
